Mirego Identifies Real Time API Errors in Native Mobile Apps with New Relic for Mobile Apps
Understanding issues in a web application may be a challenge, but getting the same understanding from a mobile app is a flat-out guessing game. Just ask Pierre-Luc Simard, CTO at Mirego. “If you’re developing a web app, you can test in every single condition from your computer,” he says. “You can try every version of each browser. You can simulate any kind of network connection. With mobile applications, you can’t do it all. You make your best guess based on the limited evidence at hand, then you release a new version to every single user through the AppStore or Google Play. You can’t release it to a subset of users — it goes out to every single user. When working with the AppStore you may have to wait two weeks for the review, and then, at long last, you find out if you actually fixed the problem. It’s like driving blind, except you don’t know if you’ve wrecked the car until weeks afterward.” In many cases, an issue emerges only after users have complained — which usually means a crop of one-star reviews in the various stores. “It can be very difficult to recover from a lot of bad reviews,” says Simard. “For every one-star review, you need a couple five-star reviews to get back on track. In other words, waiting for users to complain can be a very damaging approach to testing a mobile application.”

CanvasPop Cuts Application Response Time to Microseconds with Help from New Relic
CanvasPop, an online retail business, experiences major spikes in traffic, some more predictable than others. Most of the site’s traffic appears during the fourth-quarter holiday season, when average pageviews rise from about 25,000 per day to as many as 70,000 per day. At other times of the year, heavy media coverage may cause similar jumps in demand. Another challenge arises in the CanvasPop manufacturing facility, where order fulfillment requires a complex interchange between digital and physical processes. When a customer creates an order, he or she will upload a digital image and select from a variety of canvas sizes, frame designs, and image effects. Then the CanvasPop system delivers the image to an in-house graphic artist who can work one-on-one with the customer to recommend adjustments or enhancements. After printing on canvas, the customer’s digital image becomes a physical product, with CanvasPop employees laminating and then manually framing each piece of artwork prior to shipping. The interplay between digital image and physical product can make order fulfillment very tricky. If they’re not careful in navigating those transitions, an order can simply disappear from the system. That’s why the performance of their backend manufacturing application is so important — without it, they essentially don’t have a business.

Next Update, a small company founded in 2008, developed a SaaS-based bug and issue tracking application called Sifter. The application was designed to simplify the bug tracking process and make it accessible to both technical and non-technical team members. However, the entire Sifter application and database initially ran on a single virtual server. This meant that even minor issues could impact performance or take the application offline. Institute of Cancer Research - Case Study Part I: Beyond the visual: How Vortex speeds up data processing
Before the deployment of Vortex, scientists at The Cancer Therapeutics Unit used an Excel spreadsheet to copy and paste raw values from Thermal Shift Assay readers output before evaluating the plots to set the minimum/maximum. They would then copy and paste a subset of that data into GraphPad Prism, before copying the results back into the Excel spreadsheet for further analysis. This process was laborious and prone to errors due to manual data entry. The half a day taken to process that data had become a bottleneck for the Unit. The solution was to define and implement a standardised method that would eliminate errors and streamline the workflow.

The large amount of data generated by comprehensive in-depth characterization was a major challenge, as it required frequent analysis of various samples and large-scale studies. Current solutions often relied on multiple software packages and manual transfer, making data processing and analysis a major bottleneck in the biopharmaceutical development process. Additionally, the richness of MS data often led to the generation of large numbers of false-positive identifications, which had to be manually investigated, a process that was typically laborious and time-consuming. MAM monitoring systems also needed to deliver efficient, reproducible, and reliable detection of new or unexpected peaks. Lastly, the development and manufacturing of biopharmaceutical molecules generated data from a multitude of sources, requiring a data system that could manage and collate large amounts of disparate data.

The biopharmaceutical industry is constantly seeking strategies to improve the quality and effectiveness of their products. One such strategy is the characterization and control of glycosylation patterns. However, the current gold standard for N-glycan mapping, ultrahigh pressure liquid chromatography (UHPLC) with a fluorescence-based detection method, presents several limitations. It loses site-specific information for molecules with multiple glycosylation sites, has issues with co-elution and new peak appearance, and requires laborious data processing, analysis, and reporting. The need for a more robust and high-throughput glycan analysis methodology led to the exploration of LC-MS glycopeptide mapping.

Quality Production Ltd (QPL) had been using a paper-based manufacturing system which became unsatisfactory for a number of reasons. The system was not an integrated solution, with word processing, spreadsheet, database and drawing functions each obtained from separate, standard PC software products. Combining these into a usable documentation package was very difficult and labor intensive. Document version control problems also arose during use. Additionally, extracting timely quality data presented substantial difficulties. In reviewing and considering improvements for this process, QPL identified and prioritized a number of requirements: Increased speed and accuracy in BOM scrubbing and creating documentation packages, better efficiency in communicating ECO information to the shop floor, reduced machine programming times, extraction of real time data to drive QPL’s quality improvement initiative, and implementation of these improvements within a completely paperless environment.

While it was possible to fulfill these requirements using the existing systems, it would have adversely impacted throughput. Surmotech began investigating an integrated solution. The challenge was to find a system to manage the setup of their machines, track the components and units, and finally compile data from each point on the manufacturing floor to meet the end customer requirements for traceability and historical genealogy.
