Joy equipment faces many challenges. The first is machine integration and control. The business end of the machine has a rapidly-spinning cylinder with 6-inch diamond-studded cutting teeth. It chews through rock at rates measured in tens of tons per minute. The system grinds through the rock in front, creating a rectangular mine tunnel. Hydraulic lifters support the ceiling as the machine moves forward. Automated drills and screws drive 3-ft long screws into the ceiling to stabilize it. The rock and coal fall into a set of gathering "fingers" below the cutting cylinder. These fingers scoop up the rock and coal and deposit it onto a conveyor belt. The conveyor passes under the machine and out the back. A train of conveyor belt cars, up to a mile long, follows the cutter into the mine. The rock shoots along this train at over 400 feet per minute until it empties into rail cars at the end. Current systems place an operator cage next to the cutter. Choking dust (potentially explosive), the risk of collapse and the proximity of metal and rock mayhem make the operator cage a hazardous location.

Johnson Controls has advised Jaguar Land Rover on matters relating to the service, maintenance and repair of the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration (HVAC&R) systems installed at the Gaydon Centre for almost 20 years. In 2012 we were invited to submit a proposal for replacement of the evaporator installed in the Climatic Wind Tunnel. In a ‘Site Survey Report’ submitted to Jaguar Land Rover, we drew their attention to the key factors that we believed were behind the evaporator’s less then optimum level of performance. The bulk of these stemmed from the fact that the existing evaporator was over 20 years old and throughout its working life a number of design changes had been made to the overall system that it formed a part of, thus rendering it no longer fit for purpose. Examples of such key factors included: • The old evaporator’s level of performance was now too ‘industrial’. It was capable of operating within a temperature range of -40°C and +55°C, while projected requirements were for a temperature range of between -10°C and +50°C. • Our concerns were raised over the suitability of the existing heat transfer fluid being used, which was proving to be highly corrosive. • The old evaporator was still operating on the soon to be banned R22 refrigerant. The use of all HCFCs for the service and maintenance of HVAC&R systems will become a criminal offence from 1st January 2015.

Pharmaceutical production is subject to a strict set of enforced rules that must be adhered to and compliance to these standards is critically necessary. Due to the efforts of WIN 911’s strategic partner Micromedia, Lilly was able to adopt an alarm notification infrastructure that integrated smoothly with their existing workflows and emergency hardware and protocols. These raw energy sources enable the industrial process to function: electricity, WIN-911 Software | 4020 South Industrial Drive, Suite 120 | Austin, TX 78744 USA industrial steam, iced water, air mixtures of varying quality. Refrigeration towers, boilers and wastewater are monitored by ALERT. Eli Lilly identified 15000 potential variables, but limitations compelled them to chisel the variable list down to 300. This allowed all major alarms to be covered including pressure, discharge, quantity of waste water discharged, temperature, carbon dioxide content, oxygen & sulphur content, and the water’s pH.

Ascend operations must access multiple software systems to manage day-to-day operations in an effective and secure manner. These systems generate large sets of data which contain critical information pertaining to management systems, planning and cost information in business systems and energy consumption. As a result, Ascend management was challenged with creating relevant reports reflecting performance measures in overall context of their operational process. The company’s previous process entailed collecting and analyzing data manually which was not effective, since the information collected was generated after the fact, and was too complex for collaborative use across the organization.

Asset Tracking
Each day, PAK picked up soiled linen which had been hand counted by its customers. On the following day, they were expected to return the exact same amount of linens. However, manual counts conducted by PAK’s customers were always inaccurate (a problem inherent to soiled counting) and not being able to return exact amounts was very problematic. PAK sought an RFID-enabled textile-tracking system to enable total linen monitoring throughout the whole linen cycle, while increasing facility and operation efficiency, preventing loss and ensuring customers receive the correct textiles. PAK chose to work with USTEK RFID Solutions, a sister company that designs and manufactures integrated RFID terminals for industrial laundry markets worldwide. It was challenging to find RFID products that operated well in the PAK facility, as the environment was damp and full of metal trolleys. After testing many different readers, chips and antennas in the facility, USTEK and PAK chose to use Impinj products due to their superior performance.

Varian has a variety of medical instruments and cancer treatment systems that support today’s leading-edge treatment modalities with Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT). These treatment systems are deployed at more than 1,000 hospitals and clinics worldwide. Traditionally, system and equipment problems have required one or more service technicians to diagnose and resolve issues at the hospital site, resulting in higher costs and lost patient treatment time. For a typical treatment device, the loss of one day’s treatment time can result in 35 patients missing their treatments, which is something hospitals and patients cannot afford. Problem resolution can be complicated if incorrect or incomplete information has been provided by the operator, and also in cases where the problem cannot be recreated once the technician is on site. Operators of the Varian Acuity™ imaging system, an integrated simulator and verification tool for testing patient treatment plans, occasionally require expert assistance. Image quality optimization, solving operational problems, and tuning system performance can cost time and money for Varian and their customers.

Smart energy and next generation buildings are one of FabCity’s key topics and the Zenodys team was invited there to provide a microgrid demand response power management solution.Next generation buildings are built with a purpose to be energy sustainable and include power-generation capabilities, windmills, solar panels, self-sufficient units, etc. These buildings can generate their own power. However, when connected to a microgrid, other opportunities open up: power exchange among buildings, common storage facility, smart power management, etc. This will become an important part of the future smart cities.Microgrids are a promising concept and are expected to become one of the main energy sources in the future. In order to function as intended, microgrids must be efficiently managed with smart demand response algorithms. The aim of a microgrid is to be as self-sufficient as possible. However, this is not always the case. When the sun shines and there is plenty of wind, the participants generate their own power. But on cloudy or windless days green energy is not always available. To compensate for this, a microgrid also features a battery that stores surplus energy and provides backup power when needed.

When severe weather hits, the potential damage to a home could be disastrous. Insurance claims for flooding damage exceed $3 billion per year in the United States, and most homeowners are not even covered for even basic water damage to carpet, drywall, electrical, furniture and personal items. Sump pumps are one of the best defenses against flood damage, but when storms knock out electricity, traditional sump pumps are rendered useless. As a seller of water management and equipment protection, Pentair sought a communication platform that will support a wide range of Pentair Internet-connected products.

This document summarizes the manufacturing execution system (MES), or manufacturing operations management (MOM) solution implemented by an Aerospace parts manufacturer in order to introduce full-accountability into their assembly processes. The MES/MOM delivered “integrity of process” by providing a control system which managed all aspects of the assembly process; and created a closed-loop of accountability, delivering the desired results every-single-time.A critical aspect to the achievement of their goal was the management of a new assembly line workforce. The true test of the dependability on the MES/MOM system was it empowered operators with little to no experience to build sophisticated electronic components to the highest quality standards. It is also noteworthy that the MES/MOM was able to be integrated and operational in a very short time frame in less than four (4) days.
