About The Customer
MadeiraMadeira is a Brazil-based online marketplace that specializes in home products and furniture. Founded in 2009, the company is considered Brazil's answer to Wayfair and Ikea. With a valuation of $1 billion, MadeiraMadeira has experienced significant growth, including 100% year-on-year growth even during the pandemic. The company has a team of 200 developers who build systems in-house tailored to specific business area needs. MadeiraMadeira is known for its 'do it fast' mindset, which has enabled it to quickly adapt and take advantage of new technologies.
The Challenge
MadeiraMadeira, an online marketplace specializing in home products and furniture, faced the challenge of improving online access for shoppers and providing reliable uptime. The company needed to expand its capacity to handle surges in website usage, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when online traffic volume increased significantly. The company also faced difficulties in handling large volumes of images for its 2.3 million products. The process of compressing, resizing, and editing multiple images was time-consuming and inefficient. Additionally, MadeiraMadeira was looking to implement a multiple cloud strategy and tackle the offline market with a digital mindset.
The Solution
MadeiraMadeira adopted Fastly's solutions to address its challenges. The company switched its CDN provider to Fastly, which provided more bandwidth and processing capacity. Fastly's CDN allowed 100% of traffic to pass through it, ensuring reliable connections and security. MadeiraMadeira also migrated its dynamic content, caching, and business rules to Fastly. Fastly's management dashboard helped the team program their own caching rules using VCL code. To handle the large volumes of images, MadeiraMadeira adopted Fastly's Image Optimiser, which automatically resizes and compresses images, reducing costs, improving productivity, and speeding up page load times. Fastly's DDoS protection also improved security without sacrificing performance. As part of its digital transformation, MadeiraMadeira implemented a multiple cloud strategy and expanded to physical guide stores while maintaining its online presence.
