Longwood University was selected to host the sole vice-presidential debate of the 2016 election cycle on their campus. This event required a significant amount of coordination and communication, particularly with volunteers who would be assisting with the event. The university needed a platform that could effectively coordinate volunteers in real time for the day of the debate and corresponding events the week prior. Additionally, they needed a way to keep attendees and students notified of on-campus events.

Longwood University chose to use Trumpia, a text messaging platform, to coordinate volunteers and communicate with attendees and students. With Trumpia, Longwood was able to engage volunteers with the most immediate communication channel, texting. They used it to confirm shifts, send important notifications, and inform attendees of live T.V. times. They were able to collect a little over 1000 volunteers, which is about a fifth of their total undergraduate population. From that pool, they were even able to apply Trumpia's Smart Targeting tool to send messages to specific groups of volunteers. For example, they made a list of all media-credentialed volunteers, so they could find a Spanish-speaking student with media credentials to be interviewed for one of the Spanish networks. They also used texting to easily notify all the students who lived in dorms that had to be emptied for the debate when they were allowed to return to their rooms.
