Alter Way, a company committed to building responsible digital services, was faced with the challenge of controlling and reducing its environmental footprint. The company, which designs, develops, and manages cloud and DevOps oriented architectures, was concerned about the environmental impact of the cloud infrastructures set up at their clients' sites. Alter Way was also committed to limiting the carbon emissions of cloud infrastructures by implementing a 'GreenOps' approach. However, to effectively manage and reduce its environmental footprint, Alter Way needed to accurately measure its carbon emissions. This was a significant challenge as it required a comprehensive and accurate assessment of the company's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

To address this challenge, Alter Way decided to carry out its GHG assessment from 2020 and chose Greenly, a company recognized for its simple and intuitive measurement solution, to help calculate its IT carbon footprint. Greenly's solution enabled Alter Way to assess the carbon footprint of its cloud services and server holdings, identify its main levers for reducing electricity consumption and emissions, and communicate the carbon footprint of its managed infrastructures to its customers. Greenly's 'Cloud Carbon Assessment' model, developed after a year of R&D, allowed Alter Way to measure the carbon impact and power consumption of its cloud services accurately. The model included the study of power consumption of all processors used for virtualized computing, the study of all available Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) of servers, a cross-sectional literature review on digital emissions, a mapping between the thousands of instances of the cloud providers and the hardware used, and automated measurement of emissions from itemized bills.

The implementation of Greenly's solution has had significant operational results for Alter Way. The company is now able to accurately measure its environmental footprint, which is a crucial step towards controlling and reducing it. The detailed analysis provided by Greenly has enabled Alter Way to identify the sources of emissions due to its activity, which mainly come from energy consumption and in particular from electricity consumption. With this knowledge, Alter Way can now take targeted actions to limit its emissions. Furthermore, the 'Cloud Carbon Assessment' model developed by Greenly has provided Alter Way with a comprehensive tool for analyzing detailed invoices, adaptable to all market players. This has not only improved Alter Way's understanding of its own carbon emissions but also enhanced its ability to communicate this information to its customers.
