DataGen, a subsidiary of the Healthcare Association of New York State, sought to help its clients understand the cost implications of changes in financial policy in the healthcare industry. Previously, DataGen’s clients used Microsoft Excel and SharePoint to generate and deliver reports. However, as data changed, it took hours to update report templates and upload them to a SharePoint portal for DataGen’s growing client base. The Microsoft-based solution lacked scalability, adaptability, and had only rudimentary self-service analytic tools for business users.

DataGen is a for-profit subsidiary of the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS). It is an essential partner to healthcare organizations across the country, drawing on its specialized health policy and payment expertise to leverage claims data, improve patient quality, reduce costs, and maximize reimbursements. DataGen helps hospitals, health systems, physician groups, and medical clinics understand complex healthcare policies set forth by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) services. Healthcare providers rely on DataGen’s analytic expertise to generate patient quality metrics, monitor financial trends, and improve population health programs.

DataGen used WebFOCUS, AppStudio, and WebFOCUS BI Portal to create an analytic environment for visualizing and studying claims and payment data through interactive portals, improving the user experience for hundreds of healthcare providers, payers, and state health associations. The portals also help these organizations understand the financial implications of CMS policy changes as they make the transition from volume-based to value-based payments. DataGen has launched three analytic portals, allowing providers and integrated healthcare delivery networks across the country to visualize and analyze CMS claims data via embedded WebFOCUS dashboards and guided self-service reports.

DataGen applies logic to flag anomalies and stratify the data into program-specific benchmarks and patient care episodes. Users view data at a summary level or drill down to the specific details of each procedure. They display the results of queries via interactive charts and graphs. They also download their data and use WebFOCUS In-Document Analytics to slice and dice the information off-line, without being connected to the portal.
User adoption has grown quickly. According to Melissa Bauer, principal healthcare informatics analyst at DataGen, there are currently 175 individuals using the Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement (CJR) portal and 100 using Oncology Care Model (OCM), representing physician practices, medical centers, and healthcare organizations.
