Axicom, Australia’s leading provider of independently owned wireless infrastructure, was facing a challenge in combining data from on-premises and cloud-based business applications to create cross-platform portals, dashboards, and reports. The company was using a JD Edwards ERP system and a new asset management system called Siterra. However, they needed an analytic platform that could span both on-premises and cloud-based information systems. They also needed an integration environment that could enable real-time and batch integrations between JD Edwards and the Siterra applications to avoid duplication of effort and potential inconsistencies in the data.

Axicom is Australia’s leading provider of independently owned wireless infrastructure. The company owns, operates, and manages a portfolio of approximately 2,000 telecommunications towers, providing coverage to a substantial portion of the Australian population. Its customers include major wireless carriers such as Optus, Vodafone, Telstra, and NBN; emergency services; various State and Federal government agencies; and wireless broadband data service providers. As Axicom divested from Crown Castle, Axicom’s IT leaders found it imperative to create a new technology infrastructure while supporting management’s plans for expansion.

To solve these analytic and integration challenges, Axicom decided to standardize with Information Builders’ WebFOCUS business intelligence (BI) and analytics platform and iWay Omni-GenTM integration solutions. They used Information Builders’ Omi-Gen Integration Editions, specifically iWay DataMigrator, to load DB2 and Oracle data into a Microsoft SQL Server data mart, leveraging change data capture (CDC) technology to streamline the process. iWay Service Manager orchestrates real-time transactions between JD Edwards and Siterra via a Web Services interface. This eliminated all expensive alternatives, such as Oracle WebLogic Server licenses to manage these processes. More than 100 staff members currently use WebFOCUS and InfoAssist+ to query, analyze, and visualize the data in the new data marts.

Business users have self-service reporting and analytics, recouping the time of four highly paid FTEs and boosting efficiency for the engineering team.
The number of custom reports that need to be created and managed by the IT department has been significantly reduced.
WebFOCUS and InfoAssist are helping Axicom automate many routine tasks, even when cross-system reporting is involved.
In just one engineering department of 35 people, Axicom estimates they’re saving up to 10 percent of the work week, amounting to about three-and-a-half highly paid employees.
If you can get the same people doing 10 percent more jobs, that has a measurable impact on productivity.
