SICAE Somme & Cambraisis, one of France’s regional electrical utilities, was facing the challenge of optimizing grid management in the face of increasing renewable energy sources and the upcoming installation of Linky smart meters. The utility needed to manage a reliable grid that optimized the use of wind energy and met network stability requirements. They were looking for a partner that could help them implement the latest smart grid technology. The utility was also aware of the potential offered by digitization and was the first French utility to deploy Schneider Electric's advanced distribution management system (ADMS).

SICAE Somme & Cambraisis is one of France’s regional electricity companies set up at the end of World War I to supply power to rural communities. Today, these regional utilities service together more than 1,000 communities in 10 regions, around 500,000 residents. SICAE provides electricity to 185 municipalities in the north-eastern region of France to a total of around 30,000 customers. One of the main features of this part of the country is the number of wind farms. SICAE’s mission is two-fold: manage the electricity grid in their capacity as grid operator, and supply power through their electricity utility subsidiary.

Schneider Electric provided SICAE with an advanced distribution management system, EcoStruxure ADMS, which integrates all the tools needed by grid operators, DMS, SCADA, OMS, EMS, and geolocation into a single, effective solution. This solution is part of Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure Grid platform, which integrates the IoT into customer infrastructures by means of open, interoperable, scalable systems. It offers the opportunity to leverage the full potential of digital technology, from sensors all the way up to the highest supervisor and hypervisor layers. It allows grid operators to manage emerging and changing energy needs using a powerful software platform.
