Ultra Mobile, a young company in the competitive telco space, captured vast amounts of data that needed to be curated and analyzed to create value. However, the underlying infrastructure didn’t support what the teams needed. The dissemination of information was laborious and clunky. There weren’t enough resources or access to adequate tools to do any kind of reporting or analytics. Analysts spent their time in a vicious cycle of ‘lather, rinse, and repeat’ process with their data. With every change or update, the process was repeated in its entirety — creating bottlenecks, chaos and poor productivity.

The company operates in the highly competitive telecommunications industry and captures vast amounts of data that needs to be curated and analyzed to create value. Ultra Mobile had multiple data sources spread across a wide range of database environments, including MySQL, SQL Server, Excel, and Cloudera Hadoop. They needed a cost-effective and fast time-to-value path to data collaboration and analytics with a solid security and governance promise. With Denodo, Ultra Mobile created a data virtualization layer that federated data from all those disparate data sources across multiple data stores. They were able to institute a level of data governance and ensure consistency across results. By implementing the Looker analytics platform on top of the Denodo platform, Ultra users are able access all of that curated, governed data to develop dashboards and visualizations instantaneously, based on accurate, reliable data, as well as perform deep-dive analytics that were simply not possible before.

Ultra users are no longer limited to the ‘what happened’ scenario. They are experiencing a level of self-sufficiency and data democratization that empowers them to ask the harder, more complex, strategic questions beyond the why.
Users now get the data they want as quickly as they need it. Instead of waiting on results for weeks, they can immediately see how the company’s performing, and then delve deeper into those results.
With Looker’s scheduling functionality, now instead of sending a barrage of emails to every individual in a particular distribution list, users can go in themselves when they want to access the data they need.
Requests that used to take a week or longer to turn around, for new products and services for instance, have been condensed down to a day or at most two, depending on project complexity.
Denodo and Looker have allowed Ultra to minimize the amount of ETL developer time that’s needed, because they can virtualize the data sources. This helps reduce storage costs and prevent data bloat.
