In 2019, The Walsh Group, a general contractor, began a $76 million expansion of the northbound I-75 highway near Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, Georgia. The project aimed to alleviate congestion in one of the area's most traffic-heavy corridors. The expansion included the construction of a tunnel bridge, cast-in-place, cut and MSE walls, utility relocations, and asphalt and concrete paving. The project's complexity required firm coordination between managers and engineers in the office and project managers, engineers, superintendents, and subcontractors on the jobsite. Traditionally, a steady flow of paper plan documents would migrate between office and field workers, with field workers navigating the site in trucks filled with paper. However, The Walsh Group sought to streamline this process and mitigate risk through digital solutions.

The Walsh Group is a Chicago-based general contractor that was awarded the opportunity to lead the construction of a federally funded, $76 million expansion of the northbound I-75 highway near Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, Georgia. The project aimed to improve traffic flow in one of the area's most congested corridors. The expansion included a variety of components, such as the construction of a tunnel bridge, cast-in-place, cut and MSE walls, utility relocations, and asphalt and concrete paving. The project's complexity required firm coordination between various team members, including managers and engineers in the office and project managers, engineers, superintendents, and subcontractors on the jobsite.

The Walsh Group implemented a suite of Bluebeam technology solutions, including Revu for iPad, to streamline document management and various workflows. The use of Revu for iPad allowed project leaders to bolster complex document management workflows while superintendents and engineers were spread out across different parts of the jobsite's seven-mile expanse. Instead of transporting large paper drawings to the field, the team pushed out and viewed documents on tablets with the Revu application. The team also utilized hyperlinked document sets, allowing field workers to easily find and access details as they implemented elements on the jobsite. Additionally, the team used digital dashboards created using Revu, serving as a hyperlinked project information hub where all users could quickly and easily access critical project documents and other important resources.

The use of tablets in the field reduced the risk of incorrect information being transmitted between workers in the office and those on the jobsite.
The improved organization and clarity that Revu for iPad brought to the project made field workers more productive as they could navigate a large civil jobsite without having to carry around unorganized rolls of paper plans.
The use of hyperlinked document sets and digital dashboards streamlined more efficient productivity and communication between workers in the field and in the office.
By using tablets in the field, The Walsh Group estimates it has been able to save between roughly $10,000 to $15,000 from reduced printing costs.
