The University of New Mexico (UNM) is the state’s flagship research institution, injecting millions of dollars into New Mexico’s economy, advancing health care, and augmenting teaching and learning across the state. The university community expects IT to be agile—able to quickly meet new demands and innovate services, whether on campus or in the cloud. However, UNM’s existing network had reached its capacity limits. The IT team had the option of upgrading the line cards and management modules to add capacity. But they decided to look at something new, as financial accountability is critical for them.

The University of New Mexico (UNM) is the state’s flagship research institution. It injects millions of dollars into New Mexico’s economy, advances health care, and augments teaching and learning across the state. Students can choose from more than 200 degree and certificate programs at the main campus in Albuquerque or at any of its five branch campuses. A robust technology infrastructure and dedicated IT team support UNM’s academic, administrative and research activities through networking, phones, enterprise administrative, and collaborative applications, computing facilities in classrooms and labs, institution-wide contracts, enterprise software licensing, and services such as surveys, test scoring, and reporting. There are 84,000 active accounts on the university’s network, which fuel 3.6 million Web site visits per day, request an average of four billion database reads per month, and result in 1.172 petabytes of data storage.

UNM chose Brocade® MLX® Series Core Routers for its new network core. The Brocade MLX Series is designed to perform pivotal switching and routing between cloud data centers and end users. Built with a state-of-the-art, sixth generation programmable architecture and terabit-scale switch fabrics, the Brocade MLX Series enables UNM to meet massive bandwidth demands and provide cloud-based services with less infrastructure to reduce costs and improve efficiency. The Brocade MLX Series also provides a seamless transition to real-world SDN with support for OpenFlow 1.3. Brocade has uniquely delivered OpenFlow with a practical approach, using a true hybrid port mode where traditional Layer 2 and Layer 3 and OpenFlow forwarding can work on the same port at line rate. This unique capability provides a pragmatic path to SDN by enabling network administrators to progressively integrate OpenFlow into existing networks, giving them the programmatic control offered by SDN for specific flows while the remaining traffic is forwarded as before without physically changing the infrastructure.
