RAETECH Corporation, a company specializing in automotive design and analysis with a focus on the Motorsports arena, was involved in projects from the design and analysis phase through prototype and testing of the finished product. Their experience involves almost every type of automotive component and system. Their structural analysis routine generally includes linear, nonlinear and fatigue analyses, and they also utilize Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) where appropriate, especially in engine component designs and A to B comparisons. They firmly believe in closely coupling the design and analysis phases, followed by properly validating the real physical parts. However, they faced challenges in bringing data through the CATIA V4 importer or the Solidworks plug-in, and in creating both solid and surface meshes using Tetra.

RAETECH Corporation adopted the ANSYS ICEM CFD solution to overcome their challenges. They used the CATIA V4 importer and the Solidworks plug-in provided by ANSYS to import surfaces, and then built the boundary geometry in ANSYS ICEM CFD. The CATIA V4 reader was found to be the best CATIA V4 translator they had ever seen, and the direct Solidworks plug-in also worked flawlessly. They created both solid and surface meshes using Tetra, which easily created a triangle mesh that was continuous over all touching or near-touching surfaces. The ANSYS ICEM CFD Octree meshing approach forwent cleaning up all but the dirtiest geometry to create a good mesh quickly. Structural meshes were then exported to ANSYS and CFD meshes exported to ANSYS CFX.

The adoption of the ANSYS ICEM CFD solution by RAETECH Corporation led to several operational benefits. The intuitive and easy-to-use GUI made the process more user-friendly. The need for geometry cleanup and problem setup before meshing was minimized, saving time and resources. The customer support provided fast and thorough responses, ensuring that any issues were quickly resolved. The ICEM CFD geometry building tools worked very well, making the process more efficient. The Visual3 tool was very fast for post-processing large structural models, improving the speed and efficiency of the overall process.
