The challenge was to foster creative collaboration among editors, VFX, the sound supervisor, and director Robert Rodriguez for the production of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. The team needed to streamline and simplify workflows, enhance collaboration, and allow creative teams to experiment with different creative ideas under tight time and cost pressures. The production involved multiple editorial venues and staff working simultaneously. Rodriguez worked from his home in Austin, Texas, while other members of the editorial team were based at Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios in Austin. The team was also simultaneously working on the first two episodes of From Dusk till Dawn: The Series, which required all the media for the entire season to be kept online.

The platform allowed for constant back and forth collaboration, providing multiple versions of scenes and a constantly evolving process. The Media Composer was praised for its personal system that speaks to what film and TV editors need, offering creative tools to implement the director’s vision. Pro Tools | HDX was used for Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, with four systems—for dialogue, music, effects plus a stem recorder—linked and controlled on Troublemakers’ mix stage using Avid Satellite Link.

Pro Tools | HDX enabled the team to carry all the effects elements from the editors through to the final mix without having to do any pre-dubbing or pre-mixing.
In some of the reels, the team was able to conform and mix 500 or so sound effects without having to crush it all down into pre-mixes.
