PT. Waskita Karya (Persero) Tbk was appointed by Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation to transform the Manggarai Station in South Jakarta into the city’s terminus for long-distance trains. The project involved constructing a new bridge and assembling track panels to connect the existing first-floor mainline track to a new second-floor rail line of the main building. Waskita decided to adopt integrated BIM workflows and a digital twins approach to develop visual, digital workflows, improve communication, and enable prompt and precise decisions. They selected Bentley’s ContextCapture to generate a 3D reality mesh of the current infrastructure, OpenRail Designer to model 1.5 kilometers of new railway track, and OpenBridge Designer to model the concrete bridge structure. With these integrated applications, they established a digital twin that incorporated existing site conditions and a multidiscipline BIM design model of the proposed structure. This digital twin significantly improved the team’s productivity and replaced 2D CAD drawings as a decision-making tool. Waskita also used OpenBridge Modeler® and SYNCHRO 4D to address issues with designing the concrete bridge segment and the construction constraints. These tools helped them calculate precise geometry, coordinate information for each bridge segment, and perform construction simulation to visualize planned activities and clearly communicate them to the client and stakeholders.

The adoption of digital twins and integrated BIM workflows transformed Waskita’s approach to the project. It improved the team’s productivity and enabled them to make accurate and prompt decisions. The digital twin served as a valuable tool for visualizing different alternatives in terms of project scope and cost, and for presenting these options to the client and authorities. It also ensured the accuracy of structures being built on site, enabling engineers to measure actual distances between designed structures and existing assets to detect and resolve conflicts. This approach avoided on-site construction errors and helped Waskita meet contract demands. The success of this project has encouraged other engineers to implement this technology and has promoted building information modeling and digitalization within the industry to achieve greater efficiencies when delivering infrastructure projects in Indonesia.
