ThiemeMeulenhoff, one of the three largest educational publishers in the Netherlands, was facing several challenges. The company needed to allow management access to the latest information to gauge performance and allow staff to select and interpret data without the requirement for IT. They also needed to upgrade their reporting to comply with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and transition from a paper-based to a digital information flow. The company was also implementing a timesheet system that still needed a report module. They had the option of choosing between a traditional system, which produced reams of paper lists on a daily, weekly and monthly basis – heavily supported by their IT department – or a more modern Business Intelligence (BI) solution.

ThiemeMeulenhoff B.V. is one of the three largest educational publishers in the Netherlands. It is part of PCM Uitgevers N.V., a leading producer of newspapers, books and multimedia. ThiemeMeulenhoff has three business units: Primary Education, Vocational Education and General Secondary Education. These units, spread between offices in Utrecht and Zutphen, develop teaching and learning materials on a project basis – a total of 4,000 titles. In 2006, ThiemeMeulenhoff had a staff of 250 and a turnover of €61.3 million. The company was looking for a tool that managers and personnel could use anytime, independent of the IT department, to make cross-sections of their databases by person, department, project and time period.

ThiemeMeulenhoff implemented four QlikView applications for 130 workers in twelve days. With QlikView, the publishing house can turn out ultra-fast analyses of customers, products, inventories, prices and turnovers to improve its operating result. The QlikView Server enables the company to manipulate huge volumes of data – on the scale of 30 million records - simply and safely, and to get up-to-date insight into corporate performance. The applications were built in next to no time. In only three days each time, a team of three – a JIS consultant, someone from their IT department, and an end-user – had a ready-to-use application. Every night, QlikView draws all the data on timesheets, turnover and projects from the ERP system, which, in turn, draws them from the databases – around thirty million records in all.
