The North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust serves a diverse and, in places, highly dependent population of approximately 250,000 people. In a challenging time for budgets in the NHS it is vital that resources are used as effectively as possible, whilst continuing to improve the patient experience and the care offered. To help meet that challenge, the Trust initiated an improvement programme. After an initial review, agreement on the need to introduce new measuring tools was reached towards the end of 2009 – with a desire to find a business intelligence tool that made it possible to easily analyse and understand the performance of different parts of the trust.

QlikView was selected for two principle reasons. Firstly, it was seen as easier to use than other Business Intelligence tools that were available due to the clear graphical presentations options and intuitive nature of application browsing for the end user. Secondly, QlikView is able to consolidate disparate data sources, through its ability to feed of multiple data sources of different types, thus meaning that insightful reports could be developed quickly. QlikView was introduced at the start of 2010, and applications were ready to use within just a few weeks. Within three months it had been rolled out for use by more than 50 people within the organisation. Within a year, QlikView was in use throughout the Trust, utilised by clinicians, nurses and budget holders. This meant that QlikView was being used to improve patients’ wellbeing, operational processes and the Trust’s finances.

QlikView was initially used to replicate the existing reporting structure the Trust employed. Whilst this made their production easier it was only a starting point. Within four months of its initial deployment, QlikView was being used more substantially, to analyse and improve performance, through an ability to instantly analyse from Trust level to patient level.
QlikView enabled the Trust to discover more about their operations than any other business intelligence tool they had used or considered.
Operational management use QlikView to identify inefficiencies within the services they manage – such as the amount of time that operating theatres are in use. Clinicians use QlikView to understand their productivity and to review the difference between themselves and their peers.
