Mayflower Smart Control, a part of SSE Enterprise Contracting, was tasked with providing a green solution for the management of highway lighting and illuminated equipment. The company's connected devices offered a range of smart city applications, including environment and weather monitoring, refuse collection assistance, parking, road surface temperature sensing, and traffic counting. However, they were running restricted operations with a single local network SIM card across its connected product range. They identified the need for a centrally controlled and monitored system for public lighting installations, which would offer enhanced visibility, predictive maintenance, and a green solution for energy consumption.

Mayflower Smart Control is a part of SSE Enterprise Contracting, a company that drives forward the UK smart city scheme. They provide a 21st-century green solution for the management of highway lighting and illuminated equipment. Their market-leading products combine LED replacement with a Central Management System (CMS) installation to reduce CO2 emissions, energy, and cost spends for Local Authorities in the UK and Ireland. The Local Authorities control streetlights remotely from a web-based user interface where messages travel from the back-office application, via a cellular GSM connection, to a gateway unit (referred to as a Sub Master). The Sub Master utilises ZigBee connectivity to deliver messages to around 500 individual lights.

Mayflower Smart Control chose Eseye as their cellular connectivity provider, due to their global coverage, centralized network, and easy deployment. Eseye's ubiquitous connectivity provided Mayflower with the reliable infrastructure needed to scale its smart lighting solution across the UK. The solution involved the use of the AnyNet+ SIM card, which is programmable and comes pre-loaded with ten IMSI profiles, enabling reliable connectivity from multiple networks. Eseye's IoT connectivity management platform allowed Mayflower to remotely monitor its devices and view metrics from each individual lighting unit or aggregated for the entire estate. This provided detailed information on device performance, data sessions, and events, which could be used to control costs and improve operations. Additionally, Eseye provided Mayflower with a single price, contract, and bill for its whole estate, simplifying IoT deployments.

The implementation of Eseye's IoT connectivity solution has significantly improved Mayflower Smart Control's operations. The enhanced visibility provided by the solution has allowed for complete and flexible control over the entire estate of 400,000+ units in the UK. The predictive maintenance feature has eliminated the need for 'night scouting' to find non-working streetlights, saving time and resources. The solution's ability to accurately measure and predict energy consumption has ensured the maximum efficiency of the lighting system, contributing to the company's green solution initiative. Furthermore, the centralized management system has simplified the monitoring and control of the lighting units, improving operational efficiency.
