NightWatchman was deployed across Aviva’s estate of 30,000 PCs across multiple locations. Prior to starting the large-scale deployment, the team trialled the solution across multiple locations in the UK across 856 computers. The trial demonstrated a 6.5 percent reduction in electricity usage. NightWatchman collected data for one week and the resulting analysis report demonstrated that during this period, 60 percent of desktop PCs and 18 percent of laptops were being left on overnight. On weekends, 57 percent of desktops and 30 percent of monitors were being left on, but only 7 percent were actually being used. After a successful trial, Aviva was ready to deploy NightWatchman across 30,000 PCs. The analysis report illustrated that the leading insurer could expect to save 5,636,728kWh of electricity per year on completion of the deployment to 30,000 computers (i.e., desktops and laptops). This equates to the prevention of 2812 metric tonnes of CO2 being released into the atmosphere per year.
