Fraport, the company that manages Frankfurt Airport, one of the world's busiest transportation hubs, was facing a significant challenge. The airport's workers were unable to move seamlessly between networks, which was causing difficulties in their jobs and affecting the turnaround time of aircraft. The airport, known for its efficiency, had a strict 45-minute aircraft turnaround policy. However, mobile application and data access issues were hindering this initiative. With hundreds of workers switching between WiFi and cellular networks, connections were often unstable. This issue became particularly concerning when workers were observed trying to fix their connections while driving, putting themselves at risk.

Fraport is a leading international airport management company that owns and operates Frankfurt Airport, one of the world’s busiest international transportation hubs. The airport covers nearly 5,000 acres and sees nearly 61 million passengers a year, making it a significant player in the transportation industry. It also has the highest cargo traffic in all of Europe. Despite its size, Fraport is known for its efficiency, with a strict 45-minute aircraft turnaround policy. To support this policy, the company deployed more than one thousand rugged laptops. However, widespread mobile application and data access issues were making it difficult to maintain this speed-focused initiative.

To address these issues, Fraport turned to NetMotion and its Mobility software. The software was designed to improve connectivity across the airport without being too complicated for workers to manage. The Mobility software worked seamlessly in the background on the CF31 Toughbooks and G1 Toughpads carried by airport workers, allowing them to roam between Wi-Fi access points and cellular networks without disconnecting. This improved connectivity enabled workers to better focus on their jobs. Fraport also used Mobility’s Network Roaming report to monitor roaming events for all Mobility-enabled devices. This information allowed Fraport IT to work more effectively with their mobile data provider. Additionally, Fraport implemented traffic-friendly policies using Mobility, such as assigning large antivirus updates to only download over Wi-Fi networks, and ensuring core applications were prioritized above all other traffic.
