Mediamarket, a leading consumer electronics retailer in Italy, wanted to enhance the customer experience in its stores by introducing Wi-Fi. The company wanted to provide wireless coverage to all of its stores, supporting a large number of clients including laptops, smartphones, and Smart TVs. The technical requirements of the project emphasized security, service availability, and scalability of the solution. The company also wanted a solution that could support multiple simultaneous connections and the eventual addition of VoIP over Wi-Fi. The solution needed to be flexible to provide optimal coverage for different store layouts.

Mediamarket is part of Media-Saturn Group, the leading consumer electronics retailer in Europe. It was founded in Italy more than 20 years ago, when the first store opened in Lombardy, and quickly became the country’s first non-food chain. Today, 113 Mediamarket-owned stores— each averaging 2500 square meters and totaling more than 7500 employees—can be found in major shopping centers across Italy. Mediamarket credits its continued success with a solid market strategy focused on anticipating customers’ needs. Its ability to constantly offer customers the latest technologies, low prices, convenience, and excellent service has made it the leading electronics chain store in Italy. Two years in a row, Media World, a Mediamarket branded store, has been voted Retailer of the Year for consumer electronics by more than 165,000 consumers.

After reviewing several offerings, Mediamarket decided that Brocade® WLAN solutions best met the company’s requirements. The company selected Brocade Mobility 650 Access Points (APs) with a/b/g/n technology for Wi-Fi coverage, plus two Brocade Mobility RFS6000 Controllers to help ensure high reliability and availability for all of its wireless services. The AirDefense 4250 Appliance for Brocade Mobility provided the necessary tools for network management, security, and remote monitoring. The WLAN was designed with two separate logical accesses on the same AP to support two distinct Wi-Fi networks: one for visitors in the store, and one for internal use by employees. This helped maximize security and guard against intrusion.
