Medair, a humanitarian organization, was facing a challenge in gathering and analyzing data from the field. They were using Open Data Toolkit (ODK) to collect health and nutrition metrics in the field, which would drive their programming and the work of other NGOs in the region. However, they needed specific analytic visualization to better understand the survey data and respond most effectively with their program work. The potential for impact was enormous, as the data would be used by hundreds of personnel working in the region daily to make better-informed decisions and save more lives.

Medair is a humanitarian organization that helps people who are suffering in remote and devastated communities around the world survive crisis, recover with dignity, and develop skills to build a better future. They work in various areas including healing communities, feeding families, providing safe water and sanitation, helping in disasters, caring for women and children, responding to crisis, sheltering families, building resilience, and innovating through technology. In Lebanon, as part of Medair’s response to the Syrian Crisis, all program work is digitized. They use ODK and GIS to survey and map the scale, needs, and location of the more than 1,000 informal settlements set up by Syrian refugees across Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley.

Qlik partnered with Medair to provide a solution to their data analytics challenge. Qlik brings the data from ODK and GIS together to provide coherent, actionable information. This information is shared with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), UN International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), and other humanitarian organizations involved in responding to the needs of Syrian refugees. The dashboards developed in Qlik contain the data and are used by hundreds of personnel working in the region daily to make better-informed decisions and save more lives. This solution has helped Medair increase visibility, align needs and resources, empower decision making, reflect on their activities and capabilities, and learn from their programs and projects.
