System Integration
The healthcare system has reached an impasse with vanishing government support, escalating costs, aging demographics, and the expense of keeping up with medical progress. This has forced everyone working in the field to find innovative new ways to improve workflow processes. Feldkirch Regional Hospital in Vorarlberg, Austria, recognized early on the need for modern IT systems. By 1995 they had already implemented the Patidok electronic Healthcare Information Management System (HIMS). However, maximum efficiency is only reached with a HIS when paper-based documents are fully integrated into the electronic information flow. Therefore, they decided in 2002 to completely convert to electronic patient files. A basic requirement of this was the addition of an electronic archive.

Feldkirch Regional Hospital is a leading-edge healthcare institution located in Vorarlberg, Austria. The hospital is committed to providing high-quality patient care and has been proactive in implementing modern IT systems to improve workflow processes. As early as 1995, the hospital implemented the Patidok electronic Healthcare Information Management System (HIMS), which serves as a clinical documentation system for patient care and as a central information platform for internal and external communication. The hospital decided to completely convert to electronic patient files in 2002. They implemented DocuWare, a Document Management System (DMS), which not only serves as passive background storage but also ensures that if Patidok experiences system problems, they always maintain access to all of their documents. Using DocuWare CONNECT to SAP, scanned information is analyzed automatically using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Freeform recognition and transferred as structured data records to the accounting solution. The DMS also plays a key role in the automated storage of scans and images including the output of video, ultrasound and other equipment, integrating it all into the broad information platform. For long-term archiving, older electronic patient files are stored externally on an IBM Tivoli tape library.
