La Sarine Health Network, a conglomerate of 12 publicly funded healthcare organizations in the La Sarine district of Switzerland, was grappling with the challenges of an aging population and the consequent complex healthcare demands. The organization relied heavily on digital systems for its service delivery, from back-office administration to managing patient data. However, their existing IT infrastructure, comprising two virtualized standalone servers with built-in storage, was proving inadequate. The servers were hosted at the region's residential care center and were unable to rapidly move virtual workloads from one platform to another, reducing flexibility and increasing the risk of downtime in a disaster-recovery scenario. Moreover, the onboard storage was nearing capacity, with utilization of around 85% on each server. The organization needed a solution that could offer quick and simple orchestration of storage as a single pool, allowing it to rapidly move workloads between servers and scale out its storage resources efficiently.

La Sarine Health Network, founded in 2015, is a network of 12 publicly funded healthcare organizations in the La Sarine district of the Canton of Fribourg, Switzerland. The district is home to around 100,000 people, with a rapidly growing elderly population. The network provides a wide range of specialist care services, including residential care, homecare, emergency ambulances, and community transport services for people with disabilities. Digital systems play a crucial role in the network's service delivery, driving operations from end-to-end, from back-office administration to managing patient data.

La Sarine Health Network sought a future-ready storage platform that could meet its performance requirements and offer scalability. After evaluating proposals from various vendors, the organization chose Hitachi Vantara's solution delivered by technology partner EVOK. The chosen solution was the Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform F350, a virtualized storage platform demonstrated at EVOK’s own data center. This platform was capable of serving the needs of all 12 organizations within the health network, offering seamless scalability and allowing non-disruptive future expansion. The platform replaced the on-server hard-disk storage with a centralized, virtualized all-flash platform, providing low-latency and high performance to support the growing user base for digital healthcare applications.

With the deployment of Hitachi VSP F350, La Sarine Health Network has been able to enhance its digital services and provide high-quality care to citizens across the district. The new platform has not only improved performance and reliability but also offered the scalability needed for future growth. The other 11 establishments within the organization, which currently run their IT and storage locally, now have the opportunity to reduce their IT costs and eliminate the hassle of managing local equipment by consolidating to the new centralized environment. This consolidation is expected to result in significant cost reductions and enable a single center of excellence for future investments, thereby adding value for the Swiss taxpayer.
