The case study revolves around the challenge of ensuring safety in high-risk work environments, such as construction sites. The situation is exemplified by a scenario where a construction worker notices a problem with a bolt holding a beam in place, a failure of which could lead to fatal accidents. The challenge is further compounded by the fact that some workers may not fully understand or be able to accurately complete safety checklists due to literacy issues, dyslexia, or lack of training. This was a real-life problem encountered by George Bancs, the CEO and founder of Talk5, during a motorway remediation project in Sydney. Bancs used a 'take 5 safety checklist' to identify potential hazards before work began, but found that some workers were unable to complete the checklist accurately, thereby increasing the risk of workplace incidents.

Talk5 is an Australia-based company that helps businesses become more safety-conscious, compliant, and inclusive. The company was founded by George Bancs in 2018, who conceived the idea while heading a motorway remediation project in Sydney. Talk5 has developed a patented voice-activated workflow tool with a built-in language translator to improve team communication and safety. The company has partnered with several organizations in and outside Australia to develop safety solutions, including a mining operation in Zimbabwe, workforces from the Solomon Islands, and the New South Wales Government. Talk5 is also looking to expand in the Middle East, given the region's large-scale operations in construction and logistics.

To address this challenge, Bancs developed Talk5, a voice-activated workflow tool with a built-in language translator. The tool is designed to improve team communication and safety by mitigating risks and removing complacency, regardless of language or literacy level. The app can capture audits, checklists, surveys, and inspection information quickly and accurately. Talk5 began by developing a talk and text feature using Twilio’s WhatsApp API for users’ messages and calls. They then developed and patented a new Auto Safety-Call feature to minimize communication gaps and make safety checks faster. This feature uses Twilio’s Programmable API to reach field workers simultaneously. The Auto Safety-Call feature initiates calls at certain intervals to on-site workers and drivers, asking them questions about health and individual safety. The responses are captured via Twilio, which enables back-and-forth communication with the Talk5 platform. The data is then stored and presented to organizations for analysis and improvement.

The implementation of Talk5's solution has led to significant improvements in workplace safety communications. The Auto Safety-Call feature has minimized communication gaps and made safety checks faster. The feature initiates calls to on-site workers and drivers at certain intervals, asking them questions about health and individual safety. The responses are captured and stored for analysis, enabling organizations to identify potential hazards and make necessary improvements. This has not only enhanced safety but also compliance. Furthermore, the solution's ability to overcome language and literacy barriers has made it more inclusive, ensuring that all workers, regardless of their literacy level or language, can understand and adhere to safety guidelines. The success of the solution has led to partnerships with several organizations in and outside Australia, and plans for expansion in the Middle East.
