Athens International Airport S.A. (AIA) was established in June 1996. With more than 16 million passengers annually, AIA is regarded as one of the most modern, functional, and safest airports in the world. Apart from airport business, AIA also acts as a small telecom operator with 9,000 telephony and more than 5000 data network subscribers. The airport runs a lean machine and getting the most out of its employees’ time is crucial to the success of the IT organization. AIA was in need of a comprehensive, centrally managed solution with extensive protection from the network to the endpoint.

AIA adopted Check Point Solutions to address its challenges. The solution included 2 Power-1 5075 appliances for the external portion of the network, utilizing Firewall, IPSEC VPN, IPS, Antivirus & Anti-Malware, Anti-Spam & Email Security Software Blades. For the internal portion of the network, 2 IP 565 appliances were used, utilizing Firewall, IPsec VPN, and IPS Software Blades. Endpoint Security Software Blades were also used, including Anti-Malware & Program Control, Firewall & Compliance Check, Remote Access VPN, and WebCheck. The Check Point security management solution enabled AIA to correlate, manage, and prioritize events while minimizing the time spent analyzing log data. This resulted in reduced exposure to threats through consistent policy enforcement and maximized operational efficiency. The solution also provided endpoint security to protect corporate machines from malware and Internet threats while outside the airport network.

The implementation of Check Point Solutions at Athens International Airport resulted in several operational benefits. The consolidation of technologies directly translated to reduced complexity and costs. With Check Point’s Software Blade Architecture, one gateway did the work of several appliances. This future-proofed investment through consolidation and use of existing hardware also provided indirect benefits apart from the cost reduction. The integration of policy configuration and management along with event analysis in a single interface reduced time for incident management and minimized total cost of ownership. The solution also provided a holistic security solution, providing complete protection from the network to the endpoint. The airport was able to achieve better visualization of network threats and easier management with a single platform.
