Deliveroo, a food delivery service, was facing challenges with its initial BI tool as the company expanded. The tool lacked the necessary security, user management, and automation to support the company's growth. Business users were unable to make agile decisions as they had to wait for technical staff to write SQL for each report they requested. Code management became time-consuming for the data team as each dashboard had a unique code base. Changes in the underlying data architecture required updating the code in about 100 different locations. Additionally, variable demand based on the day of the week or time of day could put unpredictable strains on the data warehouse capacity.

Deliveroo is a London-based food delivery service founded in 2013 by former Wall Street investment banker Will Shu and his childhood friend Greg Orlowski. The company's mission is to deliver the best selection of food in the fastest time possible with the best customer service. Deliveroo uses an environmentally friendly delivery fleet of bicycles and scooters, with orders placed through an online software platform. The company focuses on restaurants available within the customer’s postal code to minimize delivery time. Deliveroo creates new revenue streams for restaurants that wouldn’t otherwise offer delivery services, while also expanding home or office dining options for customers. Since its first delivery in 2013, the service has expanded to 12 countries, 200 cities, and more than 30,000 restaurants. In 2016 alone, orders grew by 650%, an impressive jump in a rapidly expanding European market that’s expected to reach $46B by 2021.

In 2016, Deliveroo decided to look for a new platform that would be both robust and flexible enough to support their growth. They chose Looker, a data platform that provides reliable information to everyone, has a modern, API-focused modeling language, and offers self-service reporting and data visualization with the ability to drill down. However, the widespread use of Looker put too much stress on their database and performance began to lag. To solve this problem, Deliveroo migrated to Snowflake, a SQL data warehouse built for the cloud. Snowflake’s separate storage and compute architecture could easily handle hundreds of simultaneous queries, without requiring them to maintain that level of infrastructure at all times.
