Bolton NHS Foundation Trust faced the challenge of implementing a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and migrating to Windows 7 with minimal disruption to clinical staff. The Trust needed to ensure the availability of applications for over 4,000 clinical staff across more than 30 sites, while protecting information security and patient safety. The existing virtualized desktops were outdated, and the Trust inherited old desktop equipment that needed modernization. A phased roll-out was necessary to avoid impacting patient care, requiring a solution that allowed users to move between desktops easily during the migration.

Bolton NHS Foundation Trust is a UK-based integrated care organization that offers patient care in the community at more than 20 health centers and clinics, including the Royal Bolton Hospital. With a staff of over 4,000 and more than 600 beds, the Trust accommodates over 100,000 Accident and Emergency attendances and 750,000 community attendances annually. The Trust supports nearly 300 clinical applications, all of which involve potential risk in terms of patient care, necessitating zero tolerance for data loss or application downtime. The IT infrastructure supports 40-plus community sites and 4,000 users at the hospital, making it more complex than many business environments.

The Trust chose AppSense DesktopNow to simplify and streamline the migration to Windows 7. Initially selected for its value in managing user profiles, AppSense soon proved to offer much more, leading the Trust to change its long-term plans to fully leverage its functionality. The new roadmap includes a fully mobile, virtual desktop environment with Citrix XenDesktop 7.6 for desktop brokering and Microsoft App-V for application delivery. AppSense helped virtualize applications that were difficult to manage, such as the digital dictation and mobile pharmacy applications, improving logon speed and increasing functionality. The solution also simplified patch management, reducing patch failures and exposure to security vulnerabilities.
