AdventHealth Orlando, one of the busiest hospitals in the U.S., faced significant security challenges. Despite having a well-trained security staff, the hospital needed additional surveillance to monitor activities that could not be covered by human personnel alone. This was particularly crucial in situations where a person was quickly dropped off at the emergency room by a driver who then left the scene. The hospital staff found it challenging to document such incidents and identify the driver reliably. Additionally, the hospital required real-time analysis of traffic entering and leaving the premises to understand parking usage by staff and patients at different times of the day. This data was critical for the efficient operation of the hospital and future growth planning. Lastly, the hospital needed a secure automatic access control system for its staff garage. The existing methods required excessive human intervention and failed to prevent non-staff from parking in the garage.

AdventHealth Orlando opted for the PlateSmart ARES® automatic license plate recognition (ALPR) solution to address these challenges due to its accuracy and versatility. The PlateSmart ARES system allowed the hospital to monitor and record traffic activity in parking areas and other exterior zones, capturing the license plate of each vehicle entering and leaving the property along with the location, date, time, and a full-color image. This made getting accurate counts of both staff and patient vehicles a matter of running a simple report. The system also provided complete documentation for investigative purposes. In case of criminal activity, the hospital could provide a license number to police along with a vehicle image and the exact date, time, and location where the suspect arrived. PlateSmart installed ARES with 30 fixed-location ALPR cameras in the hospital’s parking garages and at key entrances and exits in the main building. One security vehicle was also equipped with a mobile ALPR unit tied to the main ARES system. Of the 30 cameras, 26 performed a dual function, providing ALPR and monitoring for security purposes, and automatic access control for the garages.

The PlateSmart ARES solution has proven to be an invaluable tool for the security staff at AdventHealth Orlando. It has helped address a multitude of situations, including the prevention of workplace violence, solving crimes, and resolving patient disputes. The speed with which ARES retrieves information has been highlighted as a key factor in helping the security staff perform their jobs more efficiently. While ARES is used in conjunction with traditional security methodologies, it is not a replacement for hard-working security personnel. Instead, it serves as an indispensable and reliable helping hand, enhancing the overall security of the hospital.
