Standard networking methods are acceptable for most SCADA systems but mission-critical power transmission and distribution system messaging and real-time control demands a zero-loss solution. IEC 61850 compliant solutions fulfill these requirements in part, by referencing IEC 62439-3, which is titled “Industrial communication networks – high availability automation networks” part 3: Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP) and High-Availability Redundancy (HSR).
