IoT GUIDE

The IoT will enable access to more data about the world than we’ve ever had before. By 2020, some analysts estimate that 10% of all digital data will be generated from connected devices. Developers will need to understand how to work with IoT data as a “design material”, understand what can be captured, and know how it should be interpreted. Developers will need to know how to design compelling, valuable, secure, and trustworthy experiences using this data, and how to enable product designers and engineers with new insights into product usage, customer behavior and more so they can improve legacy products and meet previously unmet needs.

“Designing with Data”, a chapter of of O’Reilly Media’s larger eBook, Designing Connected Products, addresses:

•  The technical context of data in the IoT

•  Current types of data-driven products and considerations for designing with data

•  How data processing in IoT is often distributed and what that means for the product

•  Typical characteristics of IoT data and their impact on design

•  The different concerns of designing types of data-driven products

•  How focusing on users' goals is the key to making data meaningful and actionable

•  What's different about visualization data for connected products
